UV Crosslinker, 254 nm

Enclosed 254 nm ultraviolet chamber that fixes nucleic acid to hybridisation membranes under measured energy or timed control, and decontaminates PCR consumables.

Typical applications

  • Cross-linking and fixing nucleic acids on hybridisation membranes
  • UV sterilisation to eliminate PCR contamination
  • DNA cutting in agarose gels
  • RecA mutation screening
  • Partial restriction endonuclease digestion of pyrimidine dimers
  • UV treatment of polymers

Worth knowing before you order

Ultraviolet is the working principle of this instrument, not a hazard to be designed around: 254 nm is what forms the covalent bond between the nucleic acid and the nylon or nitrocellulose membrane, and no visible-light source will do that job. The machine is built to contain it. The sample sits in a closed stainless steel drawer, the viewing window blocks UV, and the door lock cuts the lamps the moment the drawer is opened. Keep that interlock working and never run the chamber with it defeated — unshielded 254 nm burns the cornea and the skin in seconds and the injury is not felt while it happens. Use energy mode rather than time mode for anything that has to be reproducible: it doses to a measured J/cm² instead of to a clock, which matters because lamp output falls as the tubes age. The 312 nm and 365 nm wavelengths are options and mean a different lamp set, so state the wavelength you need when the order is placed.
