Three lines, one supplier.

Most laboratories buy chemicals from one supplier, instruments from another and consumables from a third, then spend the difference on chasing three sets of paperwork.

Why the detail matters

Three errors this industry keeps reprinting.

Supplier catalogues copy each other. Standards get revised and the old numbers stay in circulation for decades. If your quality manual inherited one of these, an assessor will find it before you do.

  1. Marshall stability and flow

    ASTM D1559ASTM D6927 · ASTM D6926

    ASTM withdrew D1559 in 1998. It still appears on Marshall equipment listings across this industry, twenty-eight years later. D6927 covers the test; D6926 covers specimen preparation.

  2. Soil compaction rammers

    IS 2720 Part 7 ⇄ Part 8Part 7 = light · Part 8 = heavy

    Part 7 is the light compaction test — 2.6 kg rammer, 310 mm drop. Part 8 is heavy — 4.89 kg, 450 mm. Published product titles routinely have these reversed. Check the mass and the drop, not the part number.

  3. Particle size by hydrometer

    ASTM D422IS 2720 Part 4 · ASTM D6913 / D7928

    Withdrawn by ASTM in 2016 and split into two replacements. Still cited on sedimentation apparatus. If your method references D422, it needs updating.

Reference

The grade on the bottle decides whether your result survives an audit.

Most supplier sites print the abbreviation and leave you to guess. Here is what each one actually means, and when it is the right choice.

AR

Analytical Reagent

The working grade for quantitative analysis. The label carries an assay figure and maximum limits for named impurities, and the batch is covered by a Certificate of Analysis. This is what an accredited laboratory buys for anything that produces a reportable number.

Use when Titrations, gravimetric analysis, standard preparation, any test whose result goes on a report or into a NABL scope.

EXTRA PURE

Extra Pure

The commonest grade in the Indian trade and the practical equivalent of LR. Purity is stated; the impurity table is shorter than AR. Substantially cheaper, and correct for a large share of routine laboratory consumption.

Use when Routine preparation, non-reportable work, bulk consumption.

HPLC

HPLC Grade

Specified on gradient-elution baseline, UV cut-off, residue after evaporation and particulate content — the four things that wreck a chromatogram. Membrane-filtered before filling.

Use when HPLC and UHPLC mobile phases, sample dilution for chromatography.

LC MS

LC-MS Grade

Everything HPLC grade specifies, plus controls on alkali-metal and phthalate content that would otherwise produce adduct ions and raise the baseline. Usually supplied in glass to avoid leachables from plastic.

Use when LC-MS and LC-MS/MS, trace quantitation, proteomics.

IP

Indian Pharmacopoeia

Tested against every test in the IP monograph for that substance, with a Certificate of Analysis referencing it. A pharmacopoeial grade is a regulatory instrument, not a purity claim — it means the material passed a specific, named set of tests.

Use when Pharmaceutical QC, formulation development, anything inspected under Schedule M or supplied into a licensed manufacturing process.

ULTRAPURE

Ultrapure / Trace Metal Grade

Acids and reagents purified so that the reagent blank does not swamp the analyte. Specified in parts per billion, per element, and supplied in containers chosen not to contribute metals back.

Use when ICP-MS, ICP-OES, AAS, trace metal digestion and sample preparation.
