Density Balance, 220 g x 1 mg, with Solid and Liquid Density Kit

Precision balance supplied with a hydrostatic density kit that determines the density of solids and liquids by weighing the sample in air and then in a liquid of known density.

Typical applications

  • Density and specific gravity of solids
  • Density of liquids using a sinker of known volume
  • Density of porous, absorbent and powdered samples
  • Purity and alloy checks on metals by density
  • General precision weighing to 220 g

Worth knowing before you order

It determines density by Archimedes' method: the sample is weighed in air, then weighed again while suspended in a liquid whose density is known, and the apparent loss of weight is the weight of the liquid it displaced, from which the volume and then the density follow. What makes a balance a density balance is the kit - the stand, the suspension hanger or basket and the water chamber - and here that kit is in the standard accessories, which is not true of every balance that lists a "density function" in its menu. The result is only as good as the liquid density you tell it: water changes density with temperature, and the balance stores a table but does not measure the liquid, so a thermometer in the chamber and the right table value are part of the method. Porous, floating or powdered samples need the absorbent and dust-powder routines rather than the plain solid mode. Check the printed reference table against your own source before relying on it: one liquid entry is named in a way that looks like a transcription slip and one solid density is quoted to four decimal places. Calibration is external and the weight is not listed in the accessories.
