Before you order
Geosynthetic tensile testing is not ordinary tensile testing, and buying an ordinary machine is the usual mistake. The wide-width method clamps a 200 mm specimen, so the frame needs the jaw width and the grip face to hold a woven fabric without letting it slip or cutting it at the jaw line — a slipped specimen reads low and a cut one reads lower. Ask what fixtures are included rather than what the frame is rated at.

Geotextile Permeability Apparatus (Permittivity)
Constant and falling head apparatus for water flow normal to the plane of a geotextile, giving the permittivity figure a drainage or filtration layer is specified on.
IndentASTM D4491/D4491MDetermines: Permittivity in s⁻¹ and the flow rate through the fabric normal to its plane
Specification for Geotextile Permeability Apparatus (Permittivity)
Specification for Geotextile Permeability Apparatus (Permittivity) Determines Permittivity in s⁻¹ and the flow rate through the fabric normal to its plane Heads Constant head and falling head, both described by ASTM D4491 EN ISO reporting EN ISO 11058 reports a velocity index — the flow velocity at a 50 mm head Water condition De-aired water. Dissolved air comes out of solution against the fabric and changes the reading, so a de-airing tank is part of the rig, not an accessory Services Installation & commissioning · Calibration · Spares & consumables Standards
ASTM D4491/D4491MEN ISO 11058Typical applications
- Filtration and drainage design for geotextiles
- Subsurface and edge drainage specification
- Erosion control and revetment underlays
- Incoming quality control against a stated permittivity

Glass Bead Set and Separating Sieves for Apparent Opening Size
The graded glass beads and separating sieves that the dry-sieving apparent opening size method consumes — the part of an AOS rig that is bought again, not once.
IndentASTM D4751Purpose: Supplies and re-separates the graded spherical glass beads that ASTM D4751 Method A1 sieves through the specimen
Specification for Glass Bead Set and Separating Sieves for Apparent Opening Size
Specification for Glass Bead Set and Separating Sieves for Apparent Opening Size Purpose Supplies and re-separates the graded spherical glass beads that ASTM D4751 Method A1 sieves through the specimen Why it is a separate line Beads are lost and fractured in use, and a fraction that has drifted out of grading quietly biases every O95 result taken with it Re-separation Beads are recovered and re-graded on the separating sieves between runs Services Spares & consumables Standards
ASTM D4751Typical applications
- Apparent opening size determination on geotextiles
- Re-grading of recovered bead fractions between test runs
Geotextile Abrasion Tester (Sliding Block)
Loaded sliding block that abrades a geotextile against abrasive paper for a set number of cycles, so the retained strength after installation damage can be measured.
IndentASTM D4886Determines: Retained strength after abrasion, as a percentage of the unabraded value
Specification for Geotextile Abrasion Tester (Sliding Block)
Specification for Geotextile Abrasion Tester (Sliding Block) Determines Retained strength after abrasion, as a percentage of the unabraded value Principle A weighted block carrying abrasive paper is reciprocated over the clamped specimen for a counted number of cycles The result needs a second machine The abrader damages the specimen; the number comes from a tensile test on it afterwards. Budget for both Consumable Abrasive paper of the grade the method specifies, replaced between specimens Services Installation & commissioning · Calibration · Spares & consumables Standards
ASTM D4886EN ISO 13427Typical applications
- Installation damage assessment for geotextiles under aggregate
- Durability comparison between candidate fabrics
- Retained-strength clauses in geosynthetic specifications

Thickness Gauge for Geotextiles and Geosynthetics
Dead-weight presser-foot gauge that reports geosynthetic thickness at a defined pressure — the figure every permittivity and transmissivity calculation is normalised against.
IndentASTM D5199Determines: Nominal thickness in millimetres, at a stated pressure
Specification for Thickness Gauge for Geotextiles and Geosynthetics
Specification for Thickness Gauge for Geotextiles and Geosynthetics Determines Nominal thickness in millimetres, at a stated pressure Reference pressure 2 kPa — the pressure both standards report at by default Additional pressures EN ISO 9863-1 also reports at higher specified pressures, commonly 20 kPa and 200 kPa, which needs the extra weight set Presser foot Circular foot of stated area. A thickness reading without the foot area and the pressure beside it is not a result Services Calibration · Spares & consumables Standards
ASTM D5199EN ISO 9863-1Typical applications
- Nominal thickness of woven, non-woven and needle-punched geotextiles
- Thickness input to permittivity and transmissivity calculations
- Incoming quality control against a stated nominal thickness

Cone Drop Tester for Geosynthetics
Drops a standard steel cone onto a clamped geosynthetic and measures the hole it makes — the dynamic perforation figure used where a fabric will be covered by dropped stone.
IndentEN ISO 13433Determines: Dynamic perforation, reported as the diameter in millimetres of the hole the cone makes
Specification for Cone Drop Tester for Geosynthetics
Specification for Cone Drop Tester for Geosynthetics Determines Dynamic perforation, reported as the diameter in millimetres of the hole the cone makes Principle A steel cone is released from a fixed height onto the specimen clamped in a ring Reading A graduated measuring cone is lowered into the hole and the diameter read off it Complements Static puncture to ASTM D6241 — the two answer different questions and specifications often ask for both Services Installation & commissioning · Calibration · Spares & consumables Standards
EN ISO 13433Typical applications

- Rockfill and revetment underlay specification
- Installation damage clauses in geosynthetic specifications

Why we publish the standard revision, not just the number.
Testing instruments are bought against a method, and a method is written against a standard. When that standard is revised, the old number stays in circulation for years — sometimes decades — because catalogues copy each other and nobody re-checks.
Three examples currently live across this industry: ASTM D1559 for Marshall stability, withdrawn in 1998. ASTM D422 for hydrometer analysis, withdrawn in 2016. IS 13311 for non-destructive concrete testing, absorbed into the IS 516 family in 2018. All three still appear on product listings you can buy from today.
That matters commercially, not just pedantically. If your quality manual cites a withdrawn standard, a NABL assessor will raise it, and the fastest way that error enters a manual is by being copied off a supplier’s specification sheet.
On qualification: for pharmaceutical customers, the documentation is half the purchase. GMP-specification equipment differs in its contact surfaces, its control system, its printed cycle records and its IQ/OQ/PQ protocol set. Specify that requirement at enquiry stage — retrofitting it after installation costs more and delays qualification.
On site preparation: compression testing machines, ductility baths, abrasion machines and large ovens need foundations, three-phase supply, drainage or extraction. We issue the foundation drawing and utility schedule with the quotation so the civil work can run in parallel with the delivery lead time rather than after it.
