Glass & Glass Containers
Testing for flat, container and pharmaceutical glass — thickness and stress, fragmentation, thermal shock and hydrolytic resistance.
"Type I glass" is not a material specification. It is the outcome of a titration. Hydrolytic resistance is measured by extracting crushed glass in water under defined conditions — ISO 719 at 98 °C, ISO 720 at 121 °C in an autoclave — and titrating the extract against dilute acid, and the class follows from the titre. Which makes the test only as good as the water: the extraction water has to meet the purity the method specifies, and ordinary distilled water standing in a soda-glass carboy will leach enough alkali to move the result on its own. The flat-glass side of the sector has the opposite problem — its acceptance test, fragmentation counting, destroys the pane, so the useful daily measurement is non-destructive surface stress taken before the toughening furnace, where something can still be done about it.
Tests run here
- Hydrolytic resistance of glass grains and of container inner surfaces
- Surface and edge stress by photoelastic measurement
- Fragmentation count on thermally toughened glass
- Thermal shock and thermal endurance
- Thickness, bow and optical distortion on flat glass
- Internal pressure and vertical load resistance of containers
- Residual strain by polariscope
- Light transmission and arsenic on pharmaceutical containers
Governed by
- IS 2553 (Part 1) — Safety glass for architectural, building and general uses
- IS 14900 — Transparent float glass, specification
- ISO 719 and ISO 720 — hydrolytic resistance of glass grains
- ASTM C1036 for flat glass and ASTM C1048 for heat-treated flat glass
- EN 12150 — thermally toughened soda lime silicate safety glass
- Indian Pharmacopoeia and USP requirements for glass containers
- NABL accreditation under ISO/IEC 17025
