Petroleum, Fuels & Lubricants
Testing for refineries, blending plants, lubricant manufacturers and fuel depots — flash, viscosity, distillation, sulphur and contamination.
Flash point decides how a product is stored, licensed and moved, and it is the number most often quoted without its method attached. Pensky-Martens closed cup (ASTM D93), Cleveland open cup (ASTM D92) and Abel closed cup do not return the same figure on the same sample. The Indian classification that actually carries legal weight — Petroleum Class A below 23 °C, Class B from 23 °C to below 65 °C, Class C from 65 °C to below 93 °C — is written around the Abel apparatus, which IS 1448 carries as P:20. Buying a Pensky-Martens tester because it is the one every catalogue lists, then reporting a petroleum class against it, is a recurring and expensive error. Heating rate matters as much: run the ramp faster than the method allows and the flash reads high.
Tests run here
- Flash point by Abel, Pensky-Martens and Cleveland open cup
- Kinematic viscosity at 40 °C and 100 °C, and viscosity index
- Density and API gravity by hydrometer and by digital density meter
- Distillation range at atmospheric pressure
- Pour point, cloud point and cold filter plugging point
- Total sulphur by X-ray fluorescence or UV fluorescence
- Acid number, base number and water by Karl Fischer
- Ash, carbon residue and copper strip corrosion
Governed by
- IS 1448 — methods of test for petroleum and its products
- IS 1460 for automotive diesel fuel and IS 2796 for motor gasoline
- ASTM D93, D92, D445, D86, D97, D4052, D664 and D4294
