Cement Manufacturing
Physical and chemical testing for cement works, grinding units and blending plants — fineness, setting, soundness, strength and oxide analysis.
The specification most cement laboratories still quote is one that no longer exists as a separate document. IS 269 was revised in 2015 to cover 33, 43 and 53 grade Ordinary Portland Cement — and the 43S and 53S sleeper grades — in a single standard, and the separate 43 grade (IS 8112) and 53 grade (IS 12269) specifications went with it. Bags now carry the IS 269 mark whatever the grade. The test methods did not move: IS 4031 remains the physical series and IS 4032 the chemical one. What an out-of-date quality manual changes is not the apparatus but the acceptance table the result is read against, so we quote the apparatus to IS 4031 and say which specification the number will be judged by.
Tests run here
- Fineness by Blaine air permeability and by dry sieving
- Standard consistency and setting time by Vicat apparatus
- Soundness by Le Chatelier and by autoclave expansion
- Compressive strength of cement mortar cubes
- Oxide analysis, loss on ignition and insoluble residue
- Chloride, sulphate and alkali content
- Heat of hydration and drying shrinkage
Governed by
- IS 269 — Ordinary Portland Cement, covering 33, 43 and 53 grade since the 2015 revision
- IS 4031 — methods of physical tests for hydraulic cement
- IS 4032 — methods of chemical analysis of hydraulic cement
- IS 1489 for Portland pozzolana cement and IS 455 for Portland slag cement
- IS 3812 — pulverized fuel ash (fly ash)
- Mandatory BIS certification (ISI mark) for cement
- NABL accreditation under ISO/IEC 17025
