Tile & Ceramics
Testing for tile bodies, glazes and whiteware — water absorption, breaking strength, abrasion, chemical resistance and raw-material control.
Everything in a tile specification hangs off one figure — water absorption — because it is what puts the tile in a class, sets its price and decides where it may be laid. It is also the figure two laboratories are most likely to disagree on, because they are not running the same test. IS 13630 (Part 2) impregnates the specimen by boiling. ISO 10545-3 removed the boiling method at its 2018 revision and now specifies vacuum impregnation only, which fills nearly all the open pores and returns a higher figure on the same tile. A body that comfortably meets a 0.5 percent limit by boiling can fail it under vacuum. Settle which method your buyer means before you buy the apparatus, not after.
Tests run here
- Water absorption, apparent porosity and bulk density
- Modulus of rupture and breaking strength
- Surface abrasion of glazed tiles and deep abrasion of unglazed
- Resistance to staining, acids and alkalis
- Crazing resistance and thermal shock
- Linear thermal expansion and moisture expansion
- Loss on ignition and oxide analysis of body and glaze raw materials
- Particle size and sieve residue on milled slip
Governed by
